Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) analyses a few cells from an embryo created by IVF with ICSI before it is transferred to the uterus. It is mainly for couples with a known risk of a genetic disease or chromosomal abnormality. At the Boudra Fertility Center in Fes, Dr Najib Boudra assesses with you whether this approach is suitable.

PGT takes place during IVF. The eggs are fertilized by ICSI and the embryos are grown for a few days in the laboratory. A few cells are then taken from each embryo and analysed by a genetics laboratory.
Only embryos whose analysis does not show the abnormality being tested for are offered for transfer. Other healthy embryos can be frozen. PGT looks for a specific abnormality: it does not rule out every disease.
PGT always requires a medical indication, for example:
Dr Boudra reviews your file; a geneticist specifies the abnormality to test for.
Ovarian stimulation, egg collection and fertilization in the laboratory.
A few cells are taken from the embryo, usually at the blastocyst stage.
Depending on the results, an embryo is transferred, often in a later cycle after freezing.

PGT requires a full IVF cycle and time for the analysis. Dr Najib Boudra explains what the test can and cannot detect, its limits and the alternatives, so that you can decide with full information.
