Nausea and vomiting are common in early pregnancy. When they become so intense that you cannot drink or eat and lose weight, this is called hyperemesis gravidarum: this severe form needs prompt medical care. Dr Najib Boudra, obstetrician gynecologist in Fes, sees you to assess and treat it.

First trimester nausea is linked to hormonal changes. It often starts around week six and usually eases in the second trimester. It is unpleasant but you can still drink and eat.
Hyperemesis gravidarum is different: repeated vomiting throughout the day, being unable to keep fluids down, weight loss and severe tiredness. It can lead to dehydration and mineral imbalances, and needs treatment.
Call the center or go to the emergency department if you have:
Clinical examination, blood and urine tests to measure dehydration.
Rehydration, sometimes through a drip, and anti-sickness medicines compatible with pregnancy.

Eat small, frequent meals, sip drinks between meals, avoid smells and foods that trigger nausea, and rest as much as you can.
Do not take any medicine without medical advice, even over the counter. If your pregnancy follows IVF, ICSI or insemination, Dr Najib Boudra follows you as a continuation of your care. Also read when to see a gynecologist.

With proper care, it usually has no effect on the baby. The main risk is for the mother: dehydration and exhaustion. That is why you should seek care quickly.
It usually eases during the second trimester. In some cases it lasts longer, and Dr Boudra then adapts the follow-up and treatment.
A short hospital stay may be needed for rehydration through a drip if you cannot keep fluids down. The doctor decides after examining you.
Only on prescription. Some treatments are compatible with pregnancy; Dr Boudra chooses the one that suits you.
