When preparing for IVF, many couples wonder what they can do themselves to give themselves the best chance. There is no miracle diet, but a healthy lifestyle supports general health and the quality of eggs and sperm.

Here are simple tips, in line with medical recommendations, to put in place in the months before IVF, for both the woman and the man.

Why start early

Eggs and sperm develop over several weeks, even several months. Changes in habits therefore need some time to have an effect. Ideally, preparation starts as soon as the decision to do IVF is made.

It is also a time when the couple regains some control, in a journey where you may sometimes feel that everything is happening to you.

A varied, balanced diet

There is no “magic” food for fertility. A Mediterranean-style diet, close to traditional Moroccan cooking, is a good base:

  • vegetables and fruit at every meal;
  • pulses (lentils, chickpeas, broad beans) and whole grains;
  • fish, eggs, poultry, and less processed meat;
  • olive oil and a handful of nuts;
  • few fast sugars, sugary drinks and ultra-processed products.

Also drink enough water, go easy on coffee and very sweet tea, and avoid supplements that have not been prescribed.

This advice applies to both partners: cooking together is also a good way to commit to the project as a couple.

Folic acid and vitamins

The World Health Organization recommends folic acid (vitamin B9) supplementation for women from the time they plan a pregnancy and in early pregnancy, to reduce the risk of certain malformations. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose.

Other vitamins, such as vitamin D, may be checked and supplemented if needed. Avoid taking several supplements on your own initiative: some may be useless, or even unsuitable.

A weight as close to balance as possible

Significant excess weight, like being underweight, can disrupt ovulation and the response to treatment. In men, excess weight may also affect sperm quality.

The aim is not a strict diet, but gradually adopting balanced eating and regular activity. Moderate weight loss, when advised, can already improve hormonal balance.

Tobacco, alcohol and toxins: stop together

Smoking harms female fertility and sperm quality. Stopping, for both partners, is a very useful step. Do not hesitate to ask for help to quit.

Alcohol and drugs should be avoided. Also tell your doctor about any medicines you take and any work exposure to chemicals or heat.

Physical activity, sleep and stress

Moderate, regular physical activity, such as walking, swimming or cycling, is beneficial. There is no need, however, to start intensive training during stimulation.

Enough regular sleep helps the body stay balanced. As for stress, it is normal during IVF. Taking time for yourself, talking as a couple or with the team, and breathing or relaxation exercises can help you through this period.

And for the man?

Preparation also concerns the husband. As well as stopping smoking and eating a balanced diet, he is advised to avoid prolonged heat around the testicles (very hot baths, frequent hammam, a laptop on the thighs) and to mention any current treatment. If there is a sperm abnormality, ICSI may be offered.

Preparing your mind and your schedule too

IVF requires regular appointments and some availability. Organising your schedule, telling trusted relatives if you wish and planning moments of rest reduce the pressure when the time comes.

It is also useful to get information from the team rather than from forums, where testimonies do not always apply to your situation. Every journey is unique.

A medical check-up before starting

Before IVF, the doctor checks that your general health allows treatment and a future pregnancy: blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid, infection screening, vaccinations. Some long-term treatments may also be adjusted.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a special IVF diet?

No. A varied Mediterranean-style diet, rich in vegetables, pulses, fish and olive oil, is a good base. No food guarantees IVF success.

Should I stop drinking coffee?

It is advised to limit coffee and caffeinated drinks. Talk to your doctor if you drink a lot.

Can I exercise during IVF?

Moderate activity is possible and beneficial. During stimulation and after the transfer, avoid intense effort and sports with a risk of impact.

Should the man change his habits too?

Yes. Stopping smoking, eating a balanced diet and avoiding heat around the testicles are useful, because sperm quality matters as much as egg quality.
