A first gynecology appointment often causes some apprehension: fear of the examination, embarrassment about intimate topics, worry about not knowing what to say. That is normal. Knowing in advance how the appointment goes helps a lot.
Here, step by step, is what happens at a first gynecology appointment in Fes, with a few tips to prepare for it.
Why a first appointment?
Women book a first appointment for very different reasons: painful or irregular periods, a question about contraception, unusual discharge, an upcoming marriage or pregnancy plan, or simply a first check-up. There is no “right” reason: your intimate health deserves attention, even when nothing is wrong.
You may come alone or with the person of your choice. If you prefer to discuss certain topics privately with the doctor, you can ask.
How to prepare
A few things make the appointment more useful:
- the date of your last period and, if possible, the usual length of your cycles;
- a list of your treatments, including contraception and supplements;
- your medical and surgical history, and your family history (breast or ovarian cancer, diabetes, etc.);
- your previous results: blood tests, ultrasounds, smear tests, reports;
- the questions you want to ask, written down so you do not forget them.
You do not need to come at a specific time of your cycle for a first appointment, unless the practice tells you otherwise. If you have your period on the day, you can call to ask whether to reschedule, especially if a smear test is planned.
The conversation: the most important part
The appointment always starts with a conversation. The doctor asks about your cycles, any pain, contraception, past pregnancies, your life as a couple and your plans. These questions are asked to care for you better, never to judge.
It is also your time: share what worries you, even if it seems minor. Everything you say is protected by medical confidentiality.
Talking about intimate topics without embarrassment
Some topics can be hard to raise: pain during intercourse, discharge, low desire, urinary leakage. Gynecologists hear these questions every day. Simple words are enough; you can also show a written note if that is easier.
Also say if anything makes you uncomfortable during the examination. A good appointment is one where you felt respected and leave with clear answers.
The examination, always explained
Depending on the reason for your visit, the doctor may suggest an examination. It is always explained before it is done, and you can ask to stop at any time. It may include:
- blood pressure, weight and a general examination;
- a breast examination to look for any abnormality;
- a gynecological examination to check the vulva, vagina and cervix.
A gynecological examination is not systematic at a first visit. If you have never had intercourse, simply say so: the examination will be adapted and no internal examination will be done without your agreement.
The pelvic ultrasound
An ultrasound shows the uterus and ovaries. It is painless and carries no risk. It is done through the abdomen, or through the vagina with a small probe, which gives more precise images. The approach is chosen with you.
At Boudra Fertility Center, the ultrasound is often done during the consultation, which gives an immediate answer to many questions. To learn more, see our page on gynecology in Fes.
The smear test and other tests
A cervical smear consists of taking a few cells from the cervix with a small brush. It takes a few seconds and helps detect changes in the cervix early. It is offered according to your age and previous results.
The doctor may also prescribe a blood test (hormone levels, for example), a vaginal swab or a mammogram, depending on the situation.
After the appointment
At the end of the appointment, the doctor explains what they found, any treatment and the next steps. Do not hesitate to ask them to repeat or to write down the explanation.
If you are planning a pregnancy, you can also be guided towards appropriate pregnancy care (page in French). Dr Najib Boudra, who has practised for more than 30 years, personally follows his patients.

Frequently asked questions
Is a first gynecology appointment painful?
Generally not. The conversation is the main part. The examination, when needed, may be slightly uncomfortable but should not hurt; it is explained beforehand and can be stopped at your request.
Can I have an appointment during my period?
Yes, for a conversation or an ultrasound. A smear test, however, is better postponed. Call the practice if in doubt.
How long does a first appointment last?
It depends on the reason for your visit and the tests done. Allow time for the conversation, which is the most important part.
Do I need to fast?
No, a gynecology appointment does not require fasting, unless a specific blood test has been requested.
