IVF helps many couples facing fertility problems to become parents. Here is how it works, who it is for and what to expect, at the Boudra Fertility Center in Fes.
IVF is an assisted reproduction technique in which an egg is fertilised by a sperm outside the body, in the laboratory. The embryos obtained are cultured in the laboratory, then transferred into the woman’s uterus, where they can develop and lead to a pregnancy.

IVF can be a solution for couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally, for different reasons:
The woman takes hormones to stimulate the growth of several ovarian follicles, each containing an egg.
Mature eggs are collected from the follicles through the vagina, under ultrasound guidance.
The partner’s sperm is collected, or obtained by testicular biopsy when needed.
In the laboratory, eggs are placed with sperm (conventional IVF) or a single sperm is injected into each egg (ICSI).
The embryos are cultured in the laboratory for 2 to 5 days.
One or two embryos are selected according to their quality and transferred into the uterus with a thin catheter.
IVF success rates depend on several factors, such as the woman’s age, the cause of infertility and the quality of the embryos. On average, the chance of pregnancy per IVF cycle is about 25 to 30%.
Dr Boudra discusses your own chances with you during the consultation, based on your situation and your test results.
Like any medical procedure, IVF carries some risks:
IVF can be demanding, both emotionally and physically, but it is a journey couples can get through. It is important to be surrounded by a competent medical team, and by psychological support when needed, at every step of the process.
